Design Summary and Analysis Final

In the article, "Force-Sensing Gloves could Control an iPhone By Detecting Gestures and How Objects Are Gripped," Owen (2019) has stated that Apple aims to enable people to interact with devices using any form of clothing made using conductive strands in the fabric, such as gloves, which provide force-sensing capabilities. The article describes how a glove could be enabled to detect the amount of pressure applied to a surface, which will deliver different commands. The material used for the clothing would incorporate conductive strands, interwoven with normal threads in the fabric, which allows the sending of electrical signals from one section to another. The conductive strands connected to the force sensing circuitry signals are sent to a wireless element to send commands or other information to a main device. The article also states that Apple thought of adding these fabrics with flexible displays to create smart clothing.

In this article, Owen introduced to us Apple’s new technology, the Force Sensing Gloves, which provides force-sensing capabilities. Although Owen adequately described the features and concept of the new technology, he did not talk provide an example of how the concept can applied in the real world.

One example on how Apple is able to use the force sensing capabilities is to integrate the technology into a smart clothing for paintball. In the game of paintball, the players fire off paintballs onto each other in a team competitive team shooting sports. With the smart clothing, it will register the amount of hits and the location of the shot they get in a game to show how vulnerable they are in the game, allowing the players to self-reflect and improve themselves in the future games. Loeffler (2019) also mentioned about the possibility that “paintball would not need to paint to register a hit”. This meant that players will not need to be stained by the paintball to show that they are hit and the smart clothing can simulate a hit by changing the surface colour of the affected area. With the implementation of force sensing capabilities, I believe that this technology will make changes to the team shooting sports and also helps to improve the overall skills of the players and be able to attract more players in a long run, allowing the game to get more recognized.

Another example on how Apple is able to incorporate the force sensing capabilities is in the virtual reality world. One issue with the current virtual reality world is that there is a reliance on controllers whereas the main point of virtual reality world is to make the game as close to reality as possible whereas it is unrealistic to be holding a controller in a virtual reality game. Perret, Vander Poorten (2018) stated that it is the imagination of everyone who experienced virtual reality environment to be able to contact and manipulate the virtual object without gripping on an additional controller. As a result of this imagination, this drives Perret and his team member to release haptic gloves that allows the user to control their virtual reality game character without holding a controller. This is a breakthrough to the virtual reality world as they are able to bring their dream and imagination into reality and make changes to the experience of virtual reality world. I believe that Apple will be able to improve on the current virtual reality gloves and making an affordable gloves that can be used for multipurpose and not just on virtual reality world by using the force sensing element together with their experience in technologies.

In conclusion, the potential of the force sensing glove lies in the force sensing capabilities which could be well integrated into smart wearable. The force sensing capabilities provide the technology with the ability to breakthrough to many different field such as gaming, engineering and medical as the technology develop more in the future.
